The City Airport Commission has agreed to commission a study – due in 60 days – on how to speed up the planned, seven-year phaseout of noisy, Stage 2 jets at the airport. The action gives neighbors good reason to hope that quieter times might soon be ahead. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who campaigned on a promise to eliminate the noisy aircraft, has embraced the plan. So, too, have airport neighbors, who must be heartened that, for once, their concerns are being taken seriously. Living near the nation’s busiest general-aviation airport, they have had to put up with jet noise and official indifference for years. The proof, of course, will be if the phaseout actually takes place within a few years. But the signs are promising, and the attention is welcome.
