During September’s PlayStation Meeting, Sony officially announced the PlayStation 4 Pro. The event focused on the enhancements PS4 Pro would have over the current PlayStation 4. This includes High Dynamic Range support, checkerboard 4K scaling, and more stable frame rates. Even those who play on standard 1080p televisions will notice these improvements. While it was admittedly difficult to see these enhancements from a live stream, it was simple to understand the power of the PlayStation 4 Pro.Out of all the games shown, the highlight was Horizon: Zero Dawn. More than any title at the event, Horizon nicely demonstrated how the PS4 Pro’s more robust horsepower will benefit PS4 games going forward. During the event, we got to see how the game looked with and without HDR and all of the other enhancements. While the title still looks impressive running on a stock PS4, it looks significantly better on a PS4 Pro.These enhancements will be something most upcoming titles can benefit from if developers choose to enable them. Below are five ways the PS4 Pro will make games better for PlayStation users.Looks great even on 1080pThough the PS4 Pro’s enhancements will be more noticeable on 4K HDR-enabled televisions, those with 1080p TVs won’t be left out of the party. Thanks to supersampling, players will get a more stable image with “virtually no jaggies.” This is possible because the game is internally rendered at a high resolution before it is shrunken down to 1080p. Some detail is lost, but users will still get vastly improved graphics.Higher detailed texturesA game like Horizon with its lush, vast environments will benefit from higher quality shadow maps and anisotropic filtering. These techniques will increase the quality of textures overall. Everything from rocks, trees, villages, people, and of course, robot dinosaurs will look real enough to touch. For Horizon specifically, the team is still working on how to tweak all of this for 1080p output, but on 4K TVs, users will easily see the richer texture quality in the game.Checkerboard renderingWith some exceptions, most titles on PS4 will not run at native 4K. However, instead of simply upscaling games, the PS4 Pro will use a special technique called checkerboard rendering to enhance visual fidelity. This will produce images that are nearly indistinguishable from true 4K. The technique itself is pretty involved, but what’s important is that checkerboard rendering will make all games on PS4 Pro look fantastic.HDRHigh Dynamic Range is something that is relatively new to gaming and 4K TVs. HDR enhances the range of colors that can be displayed on a screen, giving games a richer look. With normal rendering techniques, a lot of color fidelity is lost when converting images for normal TVs. With an HDR capable television, none of that data is lost. This is something that even owners of regular PS4s can benefit from, provided they play games on a 4K HDR television.Stable frame ratesSome games on PS4 Pro will benefit from having more stable, or higher frame rates. This isn’t something that is as widely publicized, but it is worth noting. One example is Rise of the Tomb Raider which will give players the option to play with an unlocked frame rate that will go up to 45 frames per second (provided they play at 1080p). Even though the vast majority of games won’t get higher frame rates, most will have a stable 30 frames per second at 4K resolution. The PlayStation 4 Pro will be released on November 11. Stay on target I’ve had plenty of discussions about Selina Kyle. I’m the biggest Batman nerd. To this day, I try my hardest to absorb some of the history of the DC legend. Also to this day, I love the history of the many weird and unusual villains of Gotham City. Back in Batman 101, one of the first villains you learn of is the Joker. The second is always Selina Kyle aka Catwoman. Created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, Selina Kyle has always been the opposite to Batman. But… not in an opposing way that Joker is to Batman. She’s the thief in the night. The ying to his yang. Let’s put it like this. If Batman were in Black Panther, Shuri would laugh at him uncontrollably for freezing.Selina’s comic life origins have been retconned a couple of times, but something that sticks with every story is her early life. Selina started off a life of complete ups and down but more down and out. It’s incredible how opposite she lived from Batman (or Bruce’s) lavish lifestyle and how they found true love in a hopeless place like Gotham. Selina’s home life was brutal. She survived a father who drank, a separation from Maggie, her sister and a mother who died tragically from suicide. She’s also been to juvie. After she left, she was offered a job at a carnival after pickpocketing one of the guests. She would go on developed more of her skills before a tragedy at the carnival forced her to head back to Gotham and start thieving for life.We can go into more of her tragedy, but let’s get into some good stuff, shall we? Her first appearance came in 1986, Detective Comics #569. Batman and Robin take down some criminals with the help of Catwoman, but Joker in the worst criminal decline he can go through decides it would be good to catnap Catwoman after seeing Batman almost happy for once. He hires Doctor Moon, an evil scientist to mindwipe Catwoman. There honestly seemed to be no actual motives behind this besides boredom form the Joker, which just makes so much sense.Besides being mindwipes in her first issue, Selina has long since developed a long list of skills. Both from her life at the carnival, but also from living on the streets of Gotham for so long. She’s mastered acrobatics, martial arts, boxing. She’s long since become a master of disguise with stealth. Between the tragedy that comes to her, Selina has always remained strong and dominated figure in the Batverse. She’s not afraid to tell her what on her mind. She’s seductive, stunning and complex. She may come off cold on the surface. However, she carries one of the biggest hearts on her shoulders. This is shown by her relationship with Holly “Go-Nightly” Robinson, a close friend and second Catwoman and with Batman, Bruce Wayne, who she’s destined to marry! If there’s a comic I’d love to suggest from her multi-fantastical run, I’d highly to recommend both Hush and Gotham City Sirens. Hush, written by Jeph Loeb and illustrated by Jim Lee, has to be the most prominent and epically satisfying (if not heartbreaking and somewhat frustrating) run that includes Batman and Catwoman on a level where she’s used as leverage. Please follow this up with Heart of Hush where that leverage because tenfold. (Also, Hush is the BEST villain, don’t you @ me.)After reading Hush, follow it up with Gotham City Sirens. GCS, written by Paul Dini with art by Guillem March, is everything that is delightful about being a female villain in the time of free for all. Selina combines forces Harley Quinn and Pamela Isley (Poison Ivy). They take justice into their own hands, but things don’t turn out like they’re supposed to. Think of Friends, but with cool lady villains going off to vigilante at night. Yeah, it’s that cool!Selina Kyle is also portrayed by some supremely gorgeous actresses over the years. Julie Newmar (1966) and Earth Kitt (1968) for the Batman: TV Show. Lee Meriwether (Batman, 1966), Michelle Pfeiffer (Batman, 1992), Halle Berry (Catwoman, we don’t speak of this) and Anne Hathaway (Dark Knight Rises, we speak of this a little), Camren Bicondova (Gotham) for movies, TV shows and spin-offs inside Batman universes. We haven’t touched the surface of voice acting for the gorgeous cat with talents like Zoe Kravitz, Eliza Dushku, and Tress MacNeille to name a few.I think it’s safe to say that this cats future has been steadily securing her future, both in the comics, film, tv and in our hearts. She’s come a long way from a tragic history to being a woman that is independently slaying every single day but also winning the hearts of billionaires as a side gig.Happy Birthday, Selina Kyle, you are truly one of the coolest and most beautiful cats around.
