USC notes: Trojans’ Turner gets his big chance

first_img Turner said no one actually has told him he will play more but his role in practice increased Tuesday. “I’ve been getting a whole lot more reps, that’s the main sign,” he said. Leinart concussion: Quarterback Matt Leinart said he suffered a concussion against Arizona State, which might explain why he ran a bootleg for no reason against the Sun Devils. “I had one my freshman season (at Mater Dei High),” Leinart said. “This is a lot more serious. I haven’t been hit like that in a long time. I was still able to run the offense.” Leinart said Arizona State coach Dirk Koetter apologized to him after the game, but he felt the hit, which was flagged as a personal foul, was a cheap shot. After four games, USC finally is ready to unveil freshman receiver Patrick Turner in a significant role against Arizona. “We need to play Patrick Turner more,” offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin said. “We’re planning on using him more. He only played eight plays against Arizona State.” “It’s uncalled for but it’s football and people get hit late,” he said. “Maybe it’s out of respect for me as a player. It’s a positive thing they are trying to knock me out of a game. “I remember throwing it and I saw him coming from five yards away but I didn’t think he was going to hit me. He did, so whatever. Coach Koetter apologized. I have a lot of respect for him. He recruited me for awhile when I was in high school. He was the only one (to apologize) though.” Ellison out: Tests confirmed that safety Kevin Ellison will be lost for the season with a fractured knee and stretched anterior cruciate ligament. Ellison said he would undergo exploratory arthroscopic surgery on the knee and probably face reconstructive surgery later. Linebacker Oscar Lua dislocated a finger in practice but is OK. Who goofed? USC coach Pete Carroll didn’t have much of an explanation for how the Trojans received a delay-of-game penalty following a kickoff. “That one was a surprise to all of us,” he said. “I don’t know how we missed the clock starting. All of a sudden, time was down. We couldn’t get Matt’s attention. Usually, he covers for us.” Leinart’s concussion might have made it more difficult for him to be aware of the clock. Regarding the bootleg play, Leinart said. “I don’t even know. I could give you an excuse. Who really knows? It was my fault.” Scott Wolf, (818) 713-3607 [email protected] 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set!center_img A primary reason for Turner’s expanded role is to rest starter Dwayne Jarrett, who participated in 85 plays against Arizona State. “Oh yeah, I was tired,” Jarrett said. “My legs felt like linguini. Patrick and I will be alternating so I can get rejuvenated.” last_img read more
