Byron wins to reach Cup Series playoffs, knocks out Johnson

first_img Associated Press Television News Written By COMMENT WATCH US LIVE First Published: 30th August, 2020 09:38 IST William Byron snaked his way through a smoky crash late Saturday night at Daytona International Speedway and narrowly avoided another melee a few laps later. Those moves got him to victory lane for the first time in his young NASCAR Cup Series career and back in the playoffs for the second consecutive season. They also helped knock out Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson, a seven-time series champion whose final season won’t end with another title.Winless in 120 races, Johnson made a trip to victory lane to congratulate Byron and the No. 24 team, the one now directed by Johnson’s former and long-time crew chief, Chad Knaus.“It’s a big win for Chad Knaus and William Byron,” Johnson said. “I really felt like we had a way to transfer, to win, or point our way in and things just got ugly. Unfortunate, but that’s plate racing.”Byron won the race in overtime after two late cautions and locked up one of the three postseason berths available going into the finale. Matt DiBenedetto finished 12th and secured the final spot. Clint Bowyer wrapped up a berth at the end of the opening stage.“It was too eventful,” said DiBenedetto, whose parents drove down from North Carolina to watch from the stands. “I’m mentally worn out. I’m gonna sleep great tonight, but there was so much going on there at the end.”Chase Elliott finished second, followed by Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr. and Bubba Wallace.Johnson looked as if he would land one of those three playoff spots. But he got shuffled back in the final stage and then got caught up in a wreck in the closing laps that started when Hamlin made contact with Joey Logano. Byron squeezed between the two, took the lead and held on after a green-white-checkered finish. It was the ninth overtime finish at Daytona’s summertime race in the last 13 years.Byron didn’t care how he got it, just that he finally did.“It’s been a hard couple of years in the Cup Series and trying to get my first win and trying to gel with this team,” Byron said. “These guys have done an awesome job and to be in the playoffs is amazing, man.”About 20,000 fans spread out across Daytona’s massive motorsports stadium and were treated to a frantic finish. The race was pretty clean for most of the night, but got crazy down the stretch.Tyler Reddick started the first multi-car crash by trying to block Kyle Busch after getting a huge push to take the lead. Busch clipped Reddick’s bumper, sending him into the outside wall and collecting several other cars.Busch, Erik Jones, Kurt Busch, Austin Dillon, Ryan Newman, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and others were knocked out.“(Reddick) just ran out of talent,” Newman said. “All it takes is one goofball to make a mistake.”Reddick accepted responsibility for the wreck.“If someone made that move on me, I’d be pretty mad, too,” he said.Byron swerved his way through clouds of smoke to stay in the mix there. He was even luckier after Hamlin and Logano got together.“I wasn’t going to lift,” Byron said. “It was awesome.”He did a burnout that included a few spins through Daytona’s wet infield grass and then headed to victory lane for the first time in three years.Johnson met him there, quite possibly a visual changing of the guard at Hendrick. The 22-year-old hotshot is headed back to the postseason with a long-awaited victory and the 44-year-old veteran is sliding into retirement without the storybook ending he talked all week about wanting to at least maintain as a possibility.LIBERTY CONNECTIONByron has taken remote classes at Liberty University, and the winning car carried sponsorship from the school. The deal was brokered between Hendrick Motorsports and Jerry Falwell Jr., who stepped down this week shrouded in scandal as head of the university.WALLACE REACTSWallace said before the race that there was not much of a dialogue among NASCAR drivers regarding sitting out the Cup Series regular-season finale at Daytona.NASCAR pressed on at its historic track while other sports postponed games and practices this week in the wake of the shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man, by a white police officer in Kenosha, Wisconsin.“We still have a lot of work to do as a nation to make things better for us, our next generation coming up through,” Wallace told NBC Sports before the race. “Us not following suit (with other sports) does not mean that we’re standing down. We still know what’s on our table or what’s on our plate to go out and accomplish and attempt to accomplish to make this a better place.”UP NEXTThe playoffs begin at next Sunday Darlington Raceway.Image credits: AP center_img SUBSCRIBE TO US LIVE TV Last Updated: 30th August, 2020 09:38 IST Byron Wins To Reach Cup Series Playoffs, Knocks Out Johnson William Byron snaked his way through a smoky crash late Saturday night at Daytona International Speedway and narrowly avoided another melee a few laps later FOLLOW USlast_img read more

Extensive HIV vaccine study planned in South Africa

first_imgAmerican scientists are scheduling a major trial of an experimental HIV vaccine in South Africa in 2016, “the most feasible vaccine ever developed”. It will be one of largest single clinical testing processes done in South Africa.A new, extensive HIV vaccine trial will be started in South Africa in November 2016. (Image: Wikipedia)Brand South Africa reporterA successful early-stage HIV vaccine clinical trial in South Africa has prompted the expansion of the experimental vaccine regimen into a large clinical trial. The new study, called HVTN 702, is designed to determine whether the regimen is safe, tolerable and effective at preventing HIV infection among South African adults. It will use a new variation of the RV144 shot, an experimental HIV vaccine developed by the US’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (Niaid). The drug will be trialled in South Africa at the end of 2016.Tony Fauci @NIAIDNews: “Everyone was dying & we didn’t know why’ #HVAD https://t.co/HanbTbvfm9 pic.twitter.com/ZXad2e30B3— IAVI (@IAVI) May 18, 2016The HVTN 702 study will be led by Protocol Chair Dr Glenda Gray. Gray is the president and CEO of the South African Medical Research Council, research professor of paediatrics at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, and a director of the Perinatal HIV Research Unit at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, South Africa.According to a post on the Niaid website by its director, Dr Anthony Fauci, RV144 promises to be able to cut HIV viral infections by a third, even more when the vaccine is tested in a real-world environment. Fauci is one of the global leaders in searching for a viable and affordable solution to the HIV/Aids pandemic. He says the new RV144 variation has been the most feasible vaccine ever developed. The trial will be one of largest single clinical testing processes done in South Africa.Niaid, co-funder of the trial, falls under the US National Institutes of Health, an agency of the United States Department of Health. It is responsible for global biomedical and health-related research, particularly in communicable diseases and life-threatening allergies.“A safe and effective HIV vaccine could help bring about a durable end to the HIV/Aids pandemic,” Fauci writes in the post, adding that “(it) is particularly needed in southern Africa, where HIV is more pervasive than anywhere else in the world.”In 2009, an early variation of the vaccine, developed by the US military, was trialled in Thailand. It consisted of a two-vaccine combination that cut the risk of HIV infection by 31% over three-and-a-half years.A small safety trial in South Africa of the latest variation found the new modified shots promising enough to warrant an expanded study in November 2016, pending regulatory approval. The South African trial will use 5 400 adult volunteers, each receiving five injections over a year, either vaccine or placebo shots. Results of the trial will be analysed and are expected to be released towards late 2020.“While we are making encouraging (overall) progress (in the fight against the disease) – new HIV infections have fallen by 35% globally since 2000 – the development of a safe and effective HIV vaccine would be the ultimate game- changer,” Fauci writes. The new design and schedule of the vaccine regimen scheduled for the South African trial have been adjusted to try to increase the magnitude and duration of vaccine-elicited immune responses.“Vaccine research (will) also continue in the laboratory, where scientists are investigating the use of potent antibodies that block a high percentage of global HIV strains from infecting human cells.”In May 2016, South African Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi announced that antiretroviral medicine would be made available to all HIV-positive people irrespective of their CD4 count by September. An extra R1-billion has been allocated to the health budget to make this programme possible.Watch a full presentation by Fauci on the new trial and HIV/Aids research work done by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.Source: News24Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? Is It Better to Downscale Before or After Editing?

first_imgLearn the best time to downscale in the following video tutorial by Dave Dugdale. If you want to make you computer run 4 times slower than necessary go ahead and edit 4K footage instead of 1080…or at least that’s what Dave Dugdale seems to say in the following video! The left side of this frame was edited in 1080 and the right side was edited in 4K.As cameras progress faster than broadcasters can keep up, downscaling 4K footage will continue to be an annoying yet necessary reality. With this new workflow comes new questions that need to be answered in regards to downscaling. Thankfully Dave Dugdale has created a helpful video answering one of the most basic downscaling questions, “When is the best time to downscale?” The video covers:Downscaling footageAnalyzing SharpnessRAW WorkflowsDave is using the popular Panasonic GH4. If you haven’t had a chance to see the test footage from the GH4, it’s really impressive! Check out our sharpness analysis post where the GH4 goes head to head with a Mark III and RED Epic.In short, the video surmises that while there isn’t a better way to downscale footage there is definitely a fast way. Instead of editing your entire project in 4K then exporting to 1080, you can save yourself a lot of time and RAM by setting your video editing sequence settings to HD.This video was first shared on Dave Dugdale’s YouTube Channel. Thanks for sharing Dave!Is Dave correct? Is there really no difference between downscaling during or after editing? Share in the comments below.last_img read more

Increasing Your Level of Accountability

first_img Essential Reading! Get my 2nd book: The Lost Art of Closing “In The Lost Art of Closing, Anthony proves that the final commitment can actually be one of the easiest parts of the sales process—if you’ve set it up properly with other commitments that have to happen long before the close. The key is to lead customers through a series of necessary steps designed to prevent a purchase stall.” Buy Now What you are willing to be accountable for is a large part of how your client perceives you and the value you create. If you want to be considered something more than a vendor or supplier, increasing your accountability will move you up levels.Let’s say you want to be accountable for sharing products and their features and benefits. While product knowledge is important, being accountable for taking orders is such a low level of value that your clients are always going to be open to meeting with people who can create greater value for them. This low level of value now competes with the internet, which provides information and order-taking capabilities without any friction.Maybe you can do better. Maybe you really take care of your clients, holding yourself accountable for making sure things are just right. When they have a problem, you are Johnny or Janie on the spot, dealing with service and support issues. Even though your title suggests that you are a salesperson, your behavior indicates that you are really something is more accurately described as “glorified customer service rep.” You are going to have nice, but very limited relationships here, but not ones that allow you to hold a better position than customer service rep.Being accountable for solving bona fide business problems and challenges is a much better space to occupy. You have the ability to diagnose your client’s issues, make recommendations, and improve their results. This is a much higher level of accountability, and one that will move you up a level in your client’s eyes, knowing that you can help when there is an identified challenge or opportunity. While this good, it isn’t the very best space for you to occupy as it pertains to your accountability. What you want to be accountable for is the client’s strategic decision as it pertains to the areas where your business insects with theirs. You want to be the accountable for having a clear vision of the future decisions they need to make, as well as providing direction before there is a challenge to respond to at all. To do this, you need business acumen and situational knowledge. You also need to look like a peer, someone who could easily be a part of your client’s management team. This level of accountability differentiates from all the lower levels. The more you increase your level of responsibility, the more you are accountable for in the way of results, and the more valuable you are to your client.last_img read more
